Sophie & Ali
Allison comes with 7 years of choreographing and teaching experience in a variety of urban styles including; hip hop, Latin funk, Salsaton and Reggaeton. Being of Peruvian descent her individual style is influenced by Afro-Latino vibes and, more recently, dancehall flow. She has been dancing for over 12 years and since joining the Subsdance family has developed a strong passion for Afrobeats and Latin fusions. Amongst Allison’s achievements is having choreographed dance performances which won state championships for two consecutive years, having her work showcased on TV and joining the Subsdance Queenz. When it comes to dancing, Allison hopes to instil in her class the passion and encouragement needed to forget about the day’s worries and focus on re-energising oneself.
Sophie has over 15 years of dance experience. Beginning with Ballet, and then training in martial arts, Sophie fell into Dancehall seven years ago after taking her first class in her home town of Perth.
After moving to Canberra, Sophie took a Dancehall class at Subsdance Dance Studio and never looked back. She quickly excelled to becoming one of the very first members of the performance team Subsdance Queenz, where her and her team regularly perform locally and interstate at promotional events, nightclub shows, latin dance festivals and charity events.
In 2015, Sophie was invited to teach her own Dancehall class at Subsdance where her natural talent for teaching shone through. She quickly became more immersed in the Dancehall culture, leading her to travel to the origin of Dancehall, Jamaica, to learn from the creators themselves.
Sophie’s achievements continue to accumulate. In 2015, she came first in the Australian Latin Dance Championships as a Soloist in her category. In 2017, Sophie qualified in the top six at the Australian Dancehall Queen competition. Sophie’s knowledge and passion is what draws her students to her classes every week. Her natural teaching ability and experience in learning the dance culture first hand makes every class highly valuable. Her style is certainly unique, with her black belt in taekwondo lending a ‘flexy and smooth’ feel to her rugged dancehall. Sophie loves to create an atmosphere of energy and fun in the room – get ready to dutty, gully and whine!
The Subsdance Queenz are an all-female powerhouse crew. They create pieces using traditional dancehall and afro movements but bring their own flavour to it by putting in the sass and hip hop grooves. With dancers from all different backgrounds this crew is one to watch! You’ll be captivated as soon as the music starts and by the end you wont be able to sit still. The Subsdance Queenz bring the fiyah wherever they go!
